Who'd be a referee? A cartoon from the late 19th century

Fall outs between the two on field umpires had resulted in a revolutionary change in 1891 such that the previously touch lined based referee was given total control on the basis that it would end bad decisions.

It clearly never worked out. Here's a cartoon from 1898.

NO FOND FAREWELL  Ⓒ Mark Metcalf  In older days fans would riot as their star players secretly departed to a bigger club - Gainsborough Trinity/Burnley  On Monday 3 December 1888, three strangers with suitcases alighted from the Manchester train on platform 1 at Gainsborough’s Great Northern Station. Burnley had started the first season in the Football League (note – there was just one league consisting of 12 clubs) very badly and were bottom of the table. Non-League Gainsborough Trinity had transformed their season after they employed football agent John McCabe of Leith, Edinburgh who obtained the signatures of four players - Shamrock Coyne, an Irishman from Hibernian, and three Scots, William McKay from Hearts, Alec Brady from Sunderland and John ‘Jack’ Angus from Newcastle West End. Wild celebrations led to the departure of the first ever league hat-trick hero

    The scorer of the first ever league hat-trick today in 1888 celebrated so wildly afterwards he was dropped from the Burnley team and later transferred. FIRST LEAGUE HAT-TRICK -15 September 1888 Bolton 3 (Brogan, Davenport, Cooper) v. Burnley 4 (Tait 3, Poland) Played at Pikes Lane, Bolton Just like the previous weekend, Bolton, wearing white shirts, dark-blue shorts and socks, were to race into a three-goal lead before ultimately losing a thrilling encounter. Alec Barbour set Wanderers rolling with a first minute effort that flashed just wide. Harry Tyrer then shot just over and on five minutes some lovely play by Bob Roberts set up James Brogan for the opening goal. The scorer shortly after barged Bill Smith over the line as he collected a high cross, but had done so from an offside position and Burnley, wearing striped blue-and-white shirts, dark-blue shorts and socks, escaped.
